Man arrested after fleeing from traffic stop

A man from Sanford was arrested on Thursday and faces several charges after allegedly fleeing from a traffic stop in the 200 block of Carter Street in Cameron, according to a statement issued to Sandhills Sentinel from Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields.

“The traffic stop was initiated due to prior knowledge of the driver having outstanding arrest warrants,” said Fields. “During the traffic stop, the vehicle fled, and deputies pursued and were able to get the vehicle stopped in the 6000 block of South Carbonton Road inside of Lee County. During the traffic stop, deputies conducted a search of the vehicle and found methamphetamine, oxycodone, items of drug paraphernalia, and a firearm.

Derek Taylor, 46, was arrested on charges of felony possession of schedule II-controlled substance, simple possession of schedule II-controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of firearm by felon, possession of weapon of mass destruction, felony flee to elude arrest in a motor vehicle, careless and reckless, left of center, exceeding the posted speed limit, no tail lamps, failure to stop at stop at stop sign/light, and resisting a public officer.

Taylor was also served with multiple outstanding orders for arrest out of Chatham County for several alleged narcotics and weapons violations. 

Taylor was committed to the Moore County Detention Center under a $275,003.00 secured bond with a Moore County District court date of Feb. 8.

“Lee County Sheriff’s Office also assisted in the pursuit and apprehension of the suspect,” said Fields.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
