Moore County Sheriff’s Office says a man was arrested for starving horses to death.

Johnny Baxter McCaskill Jr, 30, of Seagrove, was arrested Monday and charged with two counts of felony killing of an animal by starvation and one count of misdemeanor cruelty to animals, according to a news release from Moore County Sheriff’s Office.

The department said they went to investigate on January 14 after receiving a report of horses not being taken care of outside of Robbins in the Spies area of Moore County.

“As a result of the investigation, Moore County Animal Services rescued a total of four horses,” said the news release. “Unfortunately, as a result of the neglect, one horse was found deceased at the scene and another had to  be euthanized.”

McCaskill was jailed under a $10,000 bond, has a court date on March 6, and is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
