Moore County Library offering monthly digital literacy classes

The Sandhill Regional Library System (SRLS) recently announced new initiatives made possible by the Digital Champions Grant. SRLS is expanding its technology and offering digital literacy classes every month, ranging from beginning computer skills to basic coding.

Since Jan. 7, the library system has been offering a series of Digital Literacy classes led by the new Digital Navigator. These hands-on classes are designed to help community members develop crucial digital skills to support them personally and professionally.

In January and February, topics included creating a Google email account, exploring the World Wide Web, saving recipes online, and using Excel for basic budgeting. March will feature a two-part class on understanding social media apps—a vital topic for many in today’s digitally connected world.

To make it easier for patrons to attend, classes are scheduled consistently on the same days each month. The class schedule is as follows:

1st and 3rd Tuesday: Montgomery County Library, 215 W. Main Street, Troy, N.C. 27371 | Phone: (910) 572-1311
1st and 3rd Thursday: Hoke County Library, 334 North Main Street, Raeford, N.C. 28376 | Phone: (910) 875-2502
2nd and 4th Tuesday: Hampton B. Allen Library, 120 South Greene Street, Wadesboro, N.C. 28170 | Phone: (704) 694-5177
2nd and 4th Wednesday: Leath Memorial Library, 412 E. Franklin Street, Rockingham, N.C. 28379 | Phone: (910) 895-6337
2nd and 4th Thursday: Moore County Library, 101 W. Saunders Street, Carthage, N.C. 28327 | Phone: (910) 947-5335

Classes are followed by an hour of free tech support, where the Digital Navigator is available to assist with any technology-related questions. This service extends beyond the class material, offering patrons a chance to receive help with various tech issues.

Reservations for classes can be made through the QR code on flyers available on the SRLS website and Facebook page or by calling the hosting library. Walk-ins are welcome as long as space permits. Laptops are provided for use during these classes. A survey is also available online for those wishing to suggest future class topics.

SRLS has recently purchased new computers for all library branches. These updated computers will improve patrons’ access to the Internet, library databases, genealogy resources, and other essential digital services. Some locations will also receive new catalog computers.

In addition to the upgraded computer facilities, SRLS has improved internet accessibility for patrons who may not have reliable connectivity at home. One hundred new AT&T hotspots have been purchased and will circulate at all SRLS locations. Through a collaboration with Moore County Schools, an additional 100 hotspots have been purchased for circulation at Moore County Libraries. These efforts help to make vital digital resources accessible to all community members, regardless of their home internet availability.
