Driver airlifted after T-bone crash in Carthage

A driver was airlifted to a trauma center after a T-bone crash in Carthage on Sunday night.

The two-vehicle crash shut down Monroe Street at the U.S. Highway 15-501 crossover intersection Sunday, shortly around 8 p.m.

Officials told Sandhills Sentinel on scene that the driver of a Kia Soul allegedly failed to stop and yield the right of way on Monroe Street and pulled into the path of a Ford Fusion traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 15-501.

The driver of the Ford Fusion was an off-duty, out-of-county paramedic and told dispatch that air care would most likely be needed for the patient in the other vehicle.

Once emergency units arrived on scene, they requested a helicopter to continue to the scene for the patient in the Kia.

The impact on the driver’s side during the crash caused the Kia’s driver’s side axle to snap, leaving a deep groove in the roadway, and the car skidded off the roadway into the embankment on the opposite side of the intersection, leaving the driver trapped inside.

The driver’s door had to be cut open to get the patient out of the car, and they were then transported to a landing zone at the Veterans Memorial Park, a short distance away.

Their condition is unknown at this time.

Cypress Pointe Fire Department was dispatched as a second rescue and assisted at the landing zone.

Both vehicles sustained heavy damage in the crash.

The crossover intersection was shut down for about an hour while crews worked the scene and removed the vehicles. The

Carthage Police Department was on scene and is investigating the crash.

Responding were Carthage Fire Department, Cypress Pointe Fire Department, Moore County EMS, Moore County Sheriff’s Office and Carthage Police Department.
