Motorcycle crash near Vass claims life

A man enjoying a ride on a hot summer day with his motorcycle group died after a single-vehicle motorcycle crash Saturday afternoon. The accident happened shortly after 1 p.m. on U.S. Highway 1 in the northbound lanes just before reaching Cranes Creek Road near Vass.

According to authorities on the scene, the rider was traveling north in the left lane when he veered off onto the left shoulder toward the median, which caused him to lose control of his motorcycle and crash.

According to fire command, several Good Samaritans stopped and attempted CPR on the man from Wadesboro. Despite their efforts, along with emergency personnel, he was declared deceased.

The crash was initially thought to result from a hit-and-run, but authorities confirmed this was not the case.

One northbound lane of U.S. Highway 1 was shut down while crews worked the scene, and Highway Patrol investigated the crash.
