Motorcyclist flees from police at high speeds in Aberdeen

After allegedly fleeing from Aberdeen Police officers at a high rate of speed on a motorcycle on June 17, a 32-year-old Southern Pines man was arrested days later and is facing charges of felony flee to elude with a motor vehicle, misdemeanor reckless driving-wanton regard, reckless driving to endanger, speeding, aggressive driving, improper passing, and a center lane violation.

The case began when officers saw a motorcycle allegedly driving erratically while traveling north on U.S. 1 near Elm Street.

“An officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the motorcycle accelerated at a high rate of speed and continued north on US-1, committing several driving and traffic violations,” said the Aberdeen Police Department in a news advisory on July 9. “Aberdeen officers began to give chase but due to safety concerns, officers discontinued the pursuit.”

Five days later, an Aberdeen officer spotted a motorcycle and rider matching the description, said the police department. The officer went into the business where the man had gone to question him about the incident on June 17.

“The individual, identified as Colby Virtue, admitted to fleeing from law enforcement on June 17,” said the department.

Virtue was taken into custody. His secured bond was set at $5,500.
