The Southern Police Department is investigating a shooting at an apartment complex on Wednesday afternoon that left a person injured.
Robert Heaton, Southern Pines Deputy Chief of Police, confirmed to Sandhills Sentinel that the Southern Pines Police Department responded to Brookside Park Apartments on Shaw Avenue following the report of shots being fired into a unit. Heaton said that “there was one person who received non-life threatening injures during this incident,” which occurred around 5 p.m.
Later, in a news release, Heaton added that one or more of the suspect(s) involved had fled the scene in a white SUV.
Residents told Sandhills Sentinel on the scene that an altercation occurred before witnesses reported hearing shots. Hollow-point bullet casings could be seen on the ground nearby, and one witness showed a Sandhills Sentinel reporter where a stray bullet had struck the tire of her vehicle. Witnesses also said children were in the area when gunfire was heard and witnessed the altercation.

A bullet seen on the ground at the scene.
“This is an active and ongoing investigation, and the Southern Pines Police Department is requesting assistance from the community in an effort to help identify any and all suspects involved with this crime,” said Heaton. “Assistance can include witness accounts as well as providing residential security camera footage that may have captured any of the involved vehicles and/or suspects in the area at the time of the shooting.”
Information can be provided by calling the Southern Pines Police Department at 910-692-7031 or by calling the Southern Pines Police Department’s Crime Tip Line at 910-693-4110. All information is welcome and can be left anonymously.
Another incident unfolded around the same time as the shooting. Two people were found deceased in a different unit, reportedly from an overdose. Heaton says the two incidents were not related.
The shooting investigation remains active, and this story will be updated if more information becomes available.
