2 adults, 1 minor arrested in SP shooting case

Three people were arrested following a shooting in Southern Pines at Brookside Park Apartments on Dec. 10 that left one person with non-life-threatening injuries.

Southern Pines Police said in a press release on Dec. 19 that Devonta Clark, 29, of Greenville, is facing charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, felony conspiracy and discharging a firearm in town limits. He was arrested in Pitt County.

Chadrick Cooper, of Jackson Springs, was arrested on charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, felony conspiracy and discharging a firearm in town limits, and a juvenile, whose information was not released, was also arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

“The Southern Pines Police Department would like to thank the Moore County District Attorney’s Office, the Moore County Sheriff’s Office, the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office and the US Marshal’s Service for their assistance thus far in this case,” said the Southern Pines Department in the release.

Robert Heaton, Southern Pines Deputy Chief of Police, confirmed to Sandhills Sentinel on the afternoon of the shooting that the Southern Pines Police Department responded to Brookside Park Apartments on Shaw Avenue following the report of shots being fired into a unit. Heaton said that “there was one person who received nonlife threatening injures during this incident,” which occurred around 5 p.m.

Later, in a news release, Heaton added that one or more of the suspect(s) involved had fled the scene in a white SUV.

Residents told Sandhills Sentinel on the scene that an altercation occurred before witnesses reported hearing shots. Hollow-point bullet casings could be seen on the ground nearby, and one witness showed a Sandhills Sentinel reporter where a stray bullet had struck the tire of her vehicle. Witnesses also said children were in the area when gunfire was heard and witnessed the altercation.
