Multi-vehicle crash brings Aberdeen traffic to a crawl

A multi-vehicle wreck involving a semi-truck in Aberdeen slowed traffic to a crawl on Tuesday afternoon.

The collision occurred near the intersection of Lakeshore Drive and S. Sandhills Boulevard in front of Aberdeen Lake Park, resulting in southbound U.S. 1 being brought down to one lane.

The semi-truck suffered intense damage to the front end; the hood, wheels, and engine were badly damaged, but the trailer was not affected, and the driver declined transport by EMS. The other vehicles involved sustained moderate damage.

State Highway Patrol was on the scene investigating, and the cause was not disclosed at this time. It’s unclear if there were any injuries.

The scene took over an hour and a half to clear, resulting in extreme traffic congestion. At the peak of the traffic delay, southbound traffic on U.S. 1 was backed up to the Town and Country Shopping Center in Aberdeen.

Aberdeen Fire and Rescue worked to remove the vehicles from the highway and cleaned up leaking fluid and shattered glass. Rockwell Towing arrived on the scene with special, heavy-duty equipment to haul away the semi-truck.
