James D. Lewis, 82, of Pinehurst, passed peacefully at his home on Friday, Feb 7, surrounded by family.

Jim was born on Feb 17, 1937 in Rice Lake, WI and grew up in Forreston, Il. He attended the University of Illinois and served in the United States Army. In Illinois, he married his grade school sweetheart, Patricia Kaney and together they raised four children. The young family moved to Durham, NC in 1970, where he worked as an insurance executive. Jim and Pat retired to Dataw Island, SC, before eventually settling in Pinehurst to be closer to family. Jim and Pat would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this summer. Jim was happiest when he was spending time with family, attending his grandchildren’s activities and watching Carolina basketball. He played, coached and watched basketball, volunteered and served the church and community and was a life-long singer, performing as a soloist and in church choirs.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Lewis; daughters, Lori Amato (Herb) of Harrisonburg, VA; Holly Davis (Carty) of Pinehurst; sons, David Lewis (Janine) of Columbia, SC; Matt Lewis (Laney) of Raleigh; and grandchildren Casey and Lyndy Amato; Jessy Amato Misnik (Sean); Brandt, Madelyn and Piper Davis; Austin, Bradford and Claire Lewis; Henry, Margaret, and Isabelle Lewis.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 15th at 2 p.m. at Community Presbyterian Church in Pinehurst, followed immediately by a visitation.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Music Ministry at Community Presbyterian Church.
