Obituary for James Eckerson Johnson of Cameron

James “Jimmy” Eckerson Johnson, age 85, of Cameron NC, formerly of Sanford NC, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, April 28, 2022, at Parkview Retirement Center after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

Jimmy was born in Hoke County, now Moore County, May 3, 1936 to the late James Lauchlin Johnson and Ruth Stewart Johnson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, brother, John Duncan “JD” Johnson, sister, Bonnie Johnson Cole.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Irene Hardy Johnson, daughter, Tara J. (Johnny) Whiteside of Cameron, two granddaughters, Rebecca W. (Sam) Stalls of Waxhaw, NC and Katie W. (Nick) Cranston of Pleasant Garden, NC, great-grandchildren, Easton Grant, Clara James, Landry Mac Stalls, Natalie Beth and Camryn Faye Cranston, sisters, Frances J. Baker of Sanford, NC and Lena Collins of Vass, NC and many nieces and nephews.

Jimmy graduated from Vass-Lakeview School in 1955 and the Durham Institute of Barbering in 1956. He served six years in the U.S. Army National Guard.

Jimmy worked as a self-employed barber in Maryland and in Sanford, NC for several years. He also worked at Sears as a salesman before opening Kendale Pawn Shop in 1980. Jimmy worked at the Pawn Shop until his retirement due to his health.

He was a faithful member of Tramway Baptist Church when living in Sanford and served on many committees. After retiring he moved back to Cameron to his home place and his childhood church, Cypress Springs Presbyterian Church.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2022 at Cypress Springs Presbyterian Church at 1pm with Pastor Trey Majure and Rev. Dick Rodda presiding. Visitation with the family will be held in the church Fellowship Hall after the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be made to Cypress Springs Presbyterian Church Women’s Ministry, P O Box 7, Cameron, NC 28327 or Tramway Baptist Church Building Fund, 2401 Jefferson Davis Hwy, Sanford, NC 27332.
