Lloyd John Harvey, age 98, of Cameron, passed away on Thursday, December 28, 2023, at First Health Moore Regional Hospital, surrounded by his family.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at 2:00 pm at Mt. Pleasant Christian Church with Masonic Rites. Burial will follow in church cemetery with Military Honors.
Lloyd was born in Prospect, Maine on September 25, 1925 to the late Cleve and Gladys Harvey.
He is survived by his daughter, Kendra Rains (Shawn) of Cameron; stepsons, Kevin McGrew (Kandy), Keith McGrew (Dorothy), Kerry McGrew (Missy) all of Ohio; grandchildren, Derek, Kyle, Alexander, Vanessa; sisters, Mavis, Joyce.
He is an endowed member of Vandalia Masonic Lodge No. 742 F & A.M. of Ohio. He is a 33rd Degree Master Mason and York Cross of Honor recipient. His daughter was the apple of his eye and he was her North Star.
Lloyd’s priority was always his family. The last moments of his life were making sure that he told them that he loved them. He loved his coffee, the hotter the better, and would tell everyone that he couldn’t drink water because it would “rust his pipes.” He had the sweet tooth of a youngster and when his family would ask him if he had eaten any sweets that day he would give a mischievous grin and say “Well…” In July of 2023, he had the pleasure of spending time with the 101st Airborne Association in Tocca, Georgia. The Association members made it possible for him to return to the air in a C-47 WWII plane and watch the participants jump in honor of WWII soldiers. Lloyd stated that so much time had passed since WWII, yet these young men and women hadn’t forgotten about them. He told everyone he knew about his adventures with the Association. His family is truly grateful for the memories we have of him during that weekend. Lloyd went through the horrors of war, buried his first wife, Geraldine Wright in 1969, his only Son, Kenneth in 2001, and his second wife of 47 years in 2020. After all he had seen in life, he didn’t let it make him bitter. Instead, he had the sweetest soul that illuminated the world, and that light was contagious to anyone who met him. That light now shines from his Daughter, Son-in-law, 3 grandsons, and granddaughter. They will never let the world forget about him. He was and will always be their North Star, the Lighthouse that shines on the shore bringing them to safety.
Cpl Harvey was awarded Campaign-Central Europe, Campaign-Ardennes, Campaign-Rhineland, Purple Heart, and Parachutist Badge when he served in the Army as a Medical Aid Man from 1943-1947. He received an honor discharge with a superior character of service.
