Obituary for Nancy Abigail Riggs of Southern Pines

Nancy Abigail Riggs, 67, of Southern Pines, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on Friday evening.  Her journey was a testament to resilience, determination, and an unwavering spirit. Her strong faith carried her gracefully to the end knowing God would always take care of her.

Nancy was born in Jacksonville, NC, on March 10, 1956 and was predeceased by her father Zennie L. Riggs. She is survived by her mother Marie M. Riggs of Grants Creek, NC, her daughters, Elizabeth M. Sikora, and  husband Steven K. Sikora of Carthage, NC and Sarah J. Spencer and her husband Steven J. Spencer; her three sisters and two brothers, Susan R. Dixon and her partner Joseph E. Fields of Wilmington, NC, Emily A. Riggs of Durham, NC, Clara K. Morton and her husband Millard G. Morton Jr. of Jensen Beach, FL, Charles F. Riggs and his wife Beverly D. Riggs of Richlands, NC, and James L. Riggs of Grants Creek, NC; and her grandchildren Russell L. Sikora and Grace M. Sikora.

Nancy was a graduate of White Oak High School, the University of Chicago and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (MBA). She pursued her career at Southern Company Services as a Rate Analyst and Planner in Gulfport, MS and later in Savannah, GA. She later transferred to Savannah State University primarily working as a Director of the Office of Sponsored Research.

She carved her path with unwavering courage and self-reliance. She built a life around her refined sense of beauty, grace and elegance. She had a passionate love for dancing, literature, animals, art, music, politics and family. She celebrated life every day on her own terms and inspired everyone around her to always pursue their own dreams.

Her excellent analytical and coordination skills were applied to numerous civic and social enterprises. In Savannah, GA, she was instrumental in establishing a US Amateur Ballroom Dancers Association Chapter, and she volunteered as a docent at the Telfair Museum’s Owens–Thomas House.

She was devoted to her family and was always thinking of the welfare of others. She leaves behind a lasting impact on the lives she touched, a testament to the power of her caring spirit. Nancy will be remembered for her boundless generosity, whose warmth and hospitality made every gathering memorable.

A graveside service will be held at the Riggs Family Cemetery on Saturday, October 7. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Telfair Museum, PO Box 10081 Savannah, GA 31412, or online at telfair.org.

May we all carry forward the lessons of strength, independence, and fearlessness that Nancy so beautifully embodied. She will be deeply missed but remembered as a shining example of the power of the human spirit.
