Ted Franklin Derr Sr. was born January 5, 1946, to George Edward Derr and Virginia Irene Hammack in Mecklenburg County, N.C. He passed away Tuesday, November 225, 2025 at his home surrounded by his family. Ted was a graduate of Stanley High School class of 1964 and he was a graduate of the Institute of Government in Chapel Hill NCSHP 47th class. Ted served the State of North Carolina on the North Carolina State Highway Patrol from January 5, 1970 until his retirement October 1, 1998. After retirement, he further served the citizens of Moore as a Moore County Deputy Sheriff from December 5, 1998, until his retirement on December 31, 2019. He also retired from service with the Robbins Rescue Squad. Ted was a public servant for the citizens of Moore County for over 50 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Tony Derr and sister Donna Bumgardner. He is survived by his spouse of 37 years Anna Carter Derr, his children Ted Franklin Derr Jr. (Royilyn), Dawn Derr Hupko (Joe), Laura Brewer Wilkerson (Chris). Ted was grandfather to Matthew Scott (Mandie), Abby Hupko, Mckylee Wilkerson, CJ Wilkerson, great grandchildren Jaxon Morris, Maverick Scott and Maylyn Scott.
Ted was an avid motorcyclist who enjoyed many motorcycle trips across the US and Ireland with friends. He also enjoyed horseback riding and hunting. At home he enjoyed watching the Western Channel 24/7, especially his hero John Wayne. Ted was a loving husband, father, and friend to many. He will be deeply missed.
Graveside service, with NCSHP Honors, will be 11 am, Saturday, November 29, 2025, with Reverend Farrell Hussey officiating, at Tabernacle United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will gather with friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.
The family will receive friends for 5 to 7 pm, Friday, November 28, 2025 at Kennedy Funeral Home and at other times at the home.
