It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved William Brooks Frye, age 86, of Vass, who passed away on Sunday, August 20, 2023, at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, his earthly body finally grew tired. Bill, as he was affectionately known, leaves behind a legacy that will forever resonate in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
The family will receive family and friends on August 25, 2023 from 6 until 8, at Cox Memorial Funeral Home.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 26, 2023 at 11am at United Methodist Church of Vass with Pastors Larry Vacek and Arthur Warren officiating. Burial will follow at Johnson Grove Cemetery.
Bill was born in Vass, North Carolina on July 15, 1937, to the late Lucian Brooks Frye and Virginia “Gladys” Smith Frye. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Ruth Frye Hendricks, Rebecca “Betty” Frye King, Rachel Frye Thomas, brothers, Joe Frye and Sam Frye and three nephews and a niece.
He is survived by his sister, Ann Wallace (John) of Vass and sister-in-law, Ruth Frye also of Vass.
Bill was a man of remarkable independence, a quality that defined his character and guided his life’s journey. With a spirit unyielding and a determination unmatched, he faced life’s challenges head-on, inspiring all who had the privilege of crossing his path.
Bill had an extraordinary talent for turning ordinary moments into cherished memories through his love of cooking. A culinary maestro in his own right, he transformed his kitchen into a realm of flavor and fellowship, where every dish he prepared became an extension of his warmth and generosity. His friends and family were the fortunate beneficiaries of his culinary creations, as he lovingly prepared “southern” meals that not only nourished the body but also the soul.
His dedication to his church family was a cornerstone of his life. Bill found solace, purpose, and camaraderie among his fellow congregants. The sanctuary was his sanctuary, where he found a sense of belonging and community that brought him profound joy. His commitment extended beyond the pews and into the heart of his service, as he tirelessly worked to foster connections and build bonds of faith.
While the circumstances of his passing are heartrending, we choose to remember Bill for the fullness of the life he lived. He demonstrated that independence could coexist with compassion, and that cooking and conversation were the keys to forging meaningful connections. As we bid farewell to this extraordinary soul, let us be reminded to treasure each moment, embrace our passions, and extend kindness to all.
William Brooks Frye’s legacy will continue to inspire, teach, and guide us through the memories he created, the meals he shared, and the love he gave. In the tapestry of life, he wove threads of resilience, family, friendship, and faith that will remain etched in our hearts for generations to come.
