obituary Robert Leslie Greenfield

Robert Leslie Greenfield, aged 78, after a courageous battle with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, passed away May 3, 2020, in Pinehurst, NC.

Bob was born May 6, 1941, in the Bronx, NY, to Joseph and Jean Greenfield.  After graduating from Port Chester High School, Bob went to college, and honorably served in the US Army during Vietnam. After being discharged from the Army, Bob returned to his original passion: racing Standardbred horses. His love for harness racing took Bob from NY to New Zealand and Australia before returning home to train his own stable of horses. While racing at Long Island’s Roosevelt Raceway, Bob met his next passion: Paulette. Together they started Greenfield’s Boarding and Shipping on a small farm in Cold Spring Harbor, NY.  Several years later, Bob, his beloved wife, Paulette, along with Paulette’s sister, Deborah, and her husband Alan, bought an old farm in upstate New York. There, with daughter Lorraine in tow, they established Campbell Hall Farm, a Standardbred breeding farm and racing stable. Bob continued to train and race horses at Roosevelt, Freehold, Yonkers, and Monticello raceways, and at Goshen Historic Track.

In 2000, Bob and his family moved to North Carolina, and made Southern Pines their home.  Here Bob enjoyed working in the maintenance department for the Town of Southern Pines, until he retired in 2014.  Always quick with a kind word, and a warm smile, Bob will forever be remembered as a friendly, loving soul, who always thought of others before himself.  He was a wonderful husband and father, and proud grandfather, who loved his family, friends, country, and grilling a tasty steak.

Bob was preceded in death by his sister Judith Klein.  He is survived by his loving wife Paulette, daughter Lorraine Williams, son-in-law Gareth Williams, grandchildren Cerys and Jac, along with many in-laws, nieces and nephews who will miss their Uncle Robbie, and always remember him for his warm heart, and loving ways.
