A crash at a busy Southern Pines intersection stalled the evening commute on Tuesday evening. Emergency crews responded to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of U.S. Highway 15-501 and the entrance to the Morganton South shopping center, temporarily shutting down access to the busy retail area.
Southern Pines Fire and Rescue arrived to find one passenger trapped inside a Honda SUV with significant damage to the driver’s side. Due to the extent of the damage, firefighters had to remove the individual through the passenger door.
Traffic was blocked where the Chevrolet Silverado and Honda SUV collided and stalled in the roadway. No details regarding the cause of the crash or what had happened were released on scene.
According to authorities, one person was transported to Moore Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No serious injuries were reported among the occupants of either vehicle.
Traffic was rerouted in and out of the shopping plaza, which includes Target, HomeGoods, BJ’s Wholesale, and other stores, as the intersection remained closed for an extended period during the emergency response and cleanup.
The Southern Pines Police Department is investigating the cause of the crash.
