Rockingham police seeking 'armed and dangerous' suspect after pursuit

Police are searching for a man who fired at officers after a vehicle pursuit late Sunday night in nearby Richmond and Anson counties, according to the Rockingham Police Department.

Authorities report that around 11:32 p.m. on September 7, officers attempted to stop a blue Chevrolet Venture van on Mill Road in Rockingham after receiving an alert about a wanted person, Scotty Roy Hills.

Hills allegedly refused to stop and led officers on a chase through Rockingham and into Anson County. The Anson County Sheriff’s Office deployed “stop sticks,” which slowed the vehicle, but Hills reportedly continued driving and struck a Rockingham police vehicle before stopping on U.S. Highway 74 near Harrington Road.

Hills fled into a wooded area, brandished a firearm, and fired several shots at pursuing officers before running deeper into the woods, police said.

A search with Richmond County Sheriff’s Office K9 units did not locate him.

Hills is considered armed and dangerous, and his whereabouts are currently unknown. Because of Richmond and Anson counties’ proximity, Moore County residents are urged to stay alert.

Hills is facing charges of one count of fleeing to elude arrest with a motor vehicle, one count of assault with a deadly weapon on an official, three counts of assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm, and one count of resisting a public officer. Additional charges are pending.

Anyone with information about Hills’ whereabouts is asked to call Rockingham police at 910-895-2468.
