Instructor shortage impacting adult education and literacy

All six candidates remain in the running for an appointment to the Sandhills Community College Board of Trustees. The Moore County Board of Education will vote on which nominee will be appointed at its next regular business meeting, scheduled for June 14.

A decision not to narrow the field was made at the school board’s Monday, June 7 work session. Among those to be considered are Thomas L. Adams, Robert DeGange, Gary Evans, Michael Parker, Todd Round and Christopher Sweet.

Evans is currently a member of Sandhills Community College Board of Trustees, with a term ending this month. If reappointed, he’ll remain in the position through June of 2025. Along with Evans, current trustees are George Little, Art Blue and Connie Lovell. Little’s term expires in 2022, while Blue’s ends in June of 2023. Lovell has a term ending in 2024.

The nominee appointed next week will start July 1.

A trustee since 2017, Evans lives in Pinehurst.

Adams, a founder of the NC Captive Insurance Association, serves as that organization’s president and CEO. The resident of Southern Pines is a graduate of Lenoir Rhyne University.

DeGange, of Pinehurst, is president and CEO of Nesticon, LLC, a position he’s held for almost 15 years. He has an MBA from the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business.

Round, also from Pinehurst, is a former student at Sandhills Community College. He attended Moore County schools.

Before the board of education decided to leave the number of applicants as is, board members Philip Holmes and Ed Denison recommended only three candidates – Evans, Adams and Round – be considered for appointment.

Later in the meeting, the district stated it will recommend the board approve contracts for services for exceptional children at the June 14 session. The contracts, for the 2021-22 academic year, call for no increase in rates.
