An Aberdeen man faces a felony assault charge after an alleged altercation left a woman with a broken jaw that required extensive surgery, according to the Aberdeen Police Department.
Police said officers responded June 19 to a residence in the area of Poplar Street and Peach Avenue in Aberdeen following a reported assault.
Officers met with an adult female who told them she had confronted Frederick Cooper, 18, of Aberdeen, about allegedly driving at a high rate of speed through the neighborhood.
According to police, the confrontation became verbal before Cooper allegedly punched the woman in the face with a closed fist and fled the scene. The woman was bleeding from her mouth and had visible injuries, authorities said.
Warrants were initially obtained charging Cooper with misdemeanor assault on a female. He was arrested June 23 and given a $2,500 secured bond.
On July 13, additional warrants were obtained charging Cooper with misdemeanor assault inflicting serious injury. He was arrested and given an additional $2,500 secured bond, according to police.
Following additional investigation and consultation with the Moore County District Attorney’s Office, authorities determined the woman’s injuries were “especially extensive.” Police said the victim suffered a broken mandible and underwent surgery in which a metal plate and screws were used to repair her jaw.
On Aug. 19, Cooper was charged with an additional felony count of assault inflicting serious bodily injury.
All charges are allegations, and Cooper is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
