A new chapter has begun for Moore County book lovers. Rather, a second chapter has begun. Second Chapter Used Books opened its doors in Carthage in July, and with affordable pricing, shoppers can now treat themselves to a little shelf-indulgence.
According to Karen Lewis, owner of Second Chapter Used Books, the idea to open a bookstore came from a lifelong passion for reading and a desire to make books more accessible to everyone. Karen and her husband, Brad, decided it was time to turn a new page and make this dream a reality.
“After seeing the high cost of new books, we realized that reading should not be a luxury,” Karen explained. “We wanted to create a space where quality, affordable books are available to all. The name ‘Second Chapter’ reflects both the journey of these books finding new homes and this new chapter in our lives as small business owners.”
The prices are universal: hardcover books are $5, paperbacks are $3, and children’s books are $2.
The secret to the low prices? Second Chapter purchases gently used books in bulk, so they never know what treasures they’ll receive. Donations from the community help balance the selection and keep costs low and affordable for everyone while also allowing the store’s inventory to be restocked daily.
Second Chapter’s shelves are filled with a wide selection for readers of all interests, including fiction, history, politics, travel, memoirs, children’s books, cookbooks, and much more.
“We pride ourselves on offering something for every reader,” said Karen, who noted that Bibles are always free as part of their commitment to supporting the community’s spiritual needs.
So far, though, the best part for Karen has been interacting with the community. “Seeing familiar faces return and hearing how much they enjoy our selection has been incredibly rewarding,” Karen noted.
She added, “We’ve also loved curating our collection and bringing in books that we know our customers will cherish.”
Karen wants the community to feel that Second Chapter Used Books is more than just a bookstore. It’s a space dedicated to fostering a love of reading and lifelong learning. They hope to expand their events, promote local authors, and provide community outreach to support the local area further.
“We’re proud to call Carthage our home. My husband grew up in Southern Pines, so we have deep roots in the community,” Karen said, explaining their passion for serving Moore County. “Being part of this area allows us to connect deeply with our neighbors and contribute to the vibrant local business scene.”
As such, Karen and Brad have worked hard to create a warm, inviting atmosphere where people can take their time exploring the shelves and discovering new stories. The shop is lined with overflowing shelves, trinkets, and artwork, and there’s even a separate cozy nook that includes kids’ books, craft books, cookbooks, and more.
“We’re excited about the future and are always open to suggestions from the community,” concluded Karen. “We encourage everyone to stop by, say hello, and see what’s new on our shelves!”
With the holidays approaching, Second Chapter now offers gift cards – the perfect gift for the book lovers in your life.
