The Town of Aberdeen moved the playground equipment at Sharpe Memorial Park to its new location, announced Aberdeen Parks & Recreation Department on its Facebook page Oct. 15.
The Aberdeen Town Council at its April 26 meeting voted to relocate Sharpe Park which was at W. Maple Avenue and Pine Street due to safety concerns. The new location is next to the American Legion Post 72 at 211 E. Main Street.
Mayor Robbie Farrell said at the April meeting that the drawback to the old site was that the nearby railroad tracks were a safety issue. Planners cited hazard signs for railroad workers working with chemicals as a possible health issue for children playing in the park. Parks and Recreation Director Adam Crocker said the Sharpe Park playground reconfiguration plans included dealing with parking issues and wet areas.
The town added surfacing materials to the new park and will add more amenities soon.
“The (new) playground also includes a new poured in place rubber surfacing which provides better accessibility to the equipment,” said the parks & recreation department. “Future amenities planned to be added to this site include a picnic shelter, shade trees, benches and trash bins, and a fence enclosing the park.” The town will name the new site at a future date.
The original Sharpe Park property was donated to the town by the Sharpe family and “will remain open as a recreational green space.”
In 2018, Sharpe Park was completely renovated after a two-year renovation project.
The new park is open from sunrise to sunset.
