The Moore County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the loss of Deputy Eric Ritter. The announcement was made on the department’s Facebook page.
Ritter died on Thursday from COVID-19 complications.
Ritter was hired in 2018 as a bailiff after retiring from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol as a first sergeant in 2016.
He was assigned to a security detail at the historic courthouse in Carthage after becoming a deputy in February.
“Sheriff Ronnie Fields and the members of the Moore County Sheriff’s Office will forever be indebted to Deputy Eric Ritter for his lifetime of service,” said the sheriff’s department. “His memory will live on in our hearts and minds. Well done, good and faithful servant.”
Ritter leaves behind a wife, a child, and grandchildren. He was the son of county commissioner Otis Ritter.
