Aberdeen looking to fill vacancies on five advisory boards

The Town of Aberdeen has vacancies on five advisory boards and is soliciting applications from citizens who wish to help shape their community.

The Planning Board is currently in need of one ETJ (extraterritorial jurisdiction) member. This board meets on the 3rd Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. at Town Hall. This advisory body to the Town Board addresses land use, zoning & development issues (i.e., zoning ordinance text amendments, rezoning requests, etc.). Ideal candidates must reside within Aberdeen’s ETJ area, have an interest in community development, planning, or local government, be willing to review materials and attend monthly meetings, approach issues with objectivity, fairness, and a commitment to the public interest, and work collaboratively with fellow board members and Town staff. 

Aberdeen’s Downtown Aberdeen Advisory Board is currently in need of three regular and two alternate members. New positions offer expanded eligibility to residents and stakeholders within the Town of Aberdeen jurisdiction. This Board meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 9 a.m. at Town Hall. This is the working board established to plan and execute an annual work plan focused on downtown revitalization programs and initiatives in accordance with the Main Street Four-Point Approach® – Economic Vitality, Design, Promotion, and Organization.

Aberdeen’s Board of Adjustment is currently in need of an ETJ (extraterritorial jurisdiction) representative and one alternate member. This Board hears Variance requests and Appeals of administrative decisions. Meetings are scheduled at 6 p.m. on an as-needed basis.

The Appearance & Beautification Commission is currently in need of one regular member. This Board meets on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 12 p.m. at Town Hall. The purpose of this commission is to initiate, promote, and assist in the implementation of programs of general community beautification in the town. Members shall have demonstrated experience or an interest in the appearance and beautification of the Town of Aberdeen, or should be employed in horticulture, planning, architecture, landscape architecture, or a related discipline.

The Historic Preservation Commission meets on an as-needed basis at Town Hall. This Board is currently in need of three regular and two alternate members. This Board provides guidance and resources to property owners in the locally designated historic district and reviews applications for certain changes to non-commercial properties in the district. They are assisted in this task by an adopted set of review guidelines. The majority of members must have demonstrated special interest, experience, or education in history, architecture, archaeology, or related fields.

Members of these boards/commissions must reside within Aberdeen’s jurisdiction and are provided with technical reports and other resources by staff to assist in their duties.
