Speeding violation leads to discovery of drugs

Thirty-five-year-old Michael Murchison, of Hamlet, was arrested by Southern Pines Police on charges of felony trafficking of opium or heroin, felony possession with intent to sell and deliver schedule II controlled substance, felony possession of schedule II controlled substance, felony maintaining a vehicle for the sale of controlled substances, resisting a public officer and possession of drug paraphernalia.

“On March 21, 2024 at 10:50 pm, members of the Southern Pines Police Department’s Directed Patrol Unit stopped a vehicle for a speeding violation,” said the Southern Pines Police Department in a statement issued to Sandhills Sentinel. “During the stop and subsequent investigation, Michael Anthony Murchison was found to be in possession of Fentanyl, Oxycodone pills and drug paraphernalia. During the stop, two other occupants in the vehicle were also arrested and served with outstanding arrest warrants.”

Murchison was jailed at the Moore County Detention Center under a $75,000 secured bond. He is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
