Woman airlifted after collision with 18-wheeler in Eagle Springs

A collision involving an 18-wheeler and a passenger car sent one driver to a trauma center and shut down N.C. 705 in Eagle Springs on Sunday afternoon.

The crash occurred just before 3 p.m. at the intersection of NC 705 and Bensalem Church Road.

According to officials on scene, a Honda Civic traveling east on Bensalem Church Road was stopped at the intersection. However, the driver of the Civic pulled out from the intersection and into the path of an 18-wheeler traveling south on N.C. 705 toward N.C. 211..

The driver of the truck slammed on the brakes and attempted to avoid the car by maneuvering to the left, but they collided head-on. The collision caused the Honda to spin around, facing north in the middle of the road and sustaining extensive front-end damage.

The truck came to a stop between a small group of pine trees with its trailer partially sticking out into the road.

The driver of the truck was not injured and did not require transport to the hospital.

The driver of the car was transported to a landing zone at N.C. 705 and Old Carthage Road and airlifted to a trauma center. Authorities told Sandhills Sentinel that she was alert and talking while being extricated from the vehicle.

The drivers were the only occupants.

N.C. 705 South was shut down near the intersection for an extended period of time while crews worked the scene and the vehicles were removed.
