A property owner in Cameron lost his new chicken coop to a fire Tuesday night on Little Sweetwater Lane.
The fire was reported around 8:30 p.m. Officials at the scene said the property owner had been burning debris earlier in the day in a wooded area near the coop and believed the fire had been extinguished. However, it rekindled and spread, igniting the structure.
Multiple departments from Moore County, along with units from Cumberland County and Fort Bragg, were initially dispatched as part of a commercial structure response. Most were canceled after crews from the Crains Creek Fire Department arrived and found it was a small-scale coop on residential property.
The first units on scene utilized a booster line to reach the fire and quickly knock it down.
No chickens were in the coop at the time of the fire.
Some responding units reported that smoke from the fire was visible from more than a mile away.
The Moore County Sheriff’s Department and Moore County EMS also responded to the scene.
