One person was airlifted in critical condition after a single vehicle accident on 15-501 just a few miles north of the traffic circle.

A Kia Optima was heading north on 15-501 Friday evening when it crossed the center line and ran off the left hand side of the road.

The car went over the embankment striking a tree before coming to rest. The female driver was trapped in the heavily damaged vehicle, and rescue crews had to work to free her from the wreckage. An additional heavy rescue team was called in from Southern Pines to assist.

Once the victim was free from her car, she was taken by ambulance to meet a waiting helicopter at the Arboretum in Pinehurst, just behind the town hall.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the accident.

Responding to the scene were Pinehurst Fire & Rescue, Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, Moore County EMS, and the N.C. Highway Patrol.
