Arrest made in extortion, cyberstalking case

Moore County Sheriff’s Department has made an arrest in an extortion and cyberstalking case in Robbins.

“On Tuesday, November 21, 2023, the Moore County Sheriff’s Office received a report of Extortion/Cyberstalking,” said Sheriff Ronnie Fields in a statement issued to Sandhills Sentinel. “The victim stated she had received several messages from an individual through social media demanding she pay a specific amount of money or some personal information about her would be released.”

On Friday, investigators arrested Rodolfo Chavez Betancourt, 38, of Robbins, on charges of one count of felony extortion, one count of cyberstalking, and one count of stalking.

“This investigation is still ongoing and pending further charges,” said Fields. “Anyone with information regarding this matter is requested to please contact the Moore County Sheriff’s Office Tip Line at 910-947-4444.”

Betancourt was committed to the Moore County Detention Center under a $7,500 secured bond pending a first court appearance in Moore County district court on Feb. 28. He is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
