Emergency crews responded to a person lying in the road Monday just after 9 p.m. on W. Pennsylvania Avenue in Southern Pines, near Bruce’s Tavern.
Upon arrival, they found a male victim lying near a bicycle. Due to the extent of the injuries, a medivac helicopter was called, and a landing zone was set up at the ballfield on Morganton Road.
Initially, it was thought to be a hit and run, but law enforcement is still investigating.
There is a possibility the individual was thrown over the handlebars of the bike coming down the steep hill. Family members reported the gentleman had some work done on the bike earlier in the day.
Southern Pines Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
Responding to the scene were Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, Moore County EMS, and Southern Pines Police Department.
