Cameron driver survives head-on crash with tree

A man escaped with his life after crashing headlong into a tree Monday afternoon. Around 12:30 p.m., first responders received a call alerting them to a vehicle that had struck a tree on Cypress Church Road, right on the Cameron-Vass border.

According to authorities, the incident occurred when the driver of a Volkswagen Routan lost control of the minivan, deviated from his lane, and went careening from the roadway. The Routan then barreled into a tree, which struck so hard that the tree fell due to the impact.

Despite the severity of the impact, the driver managed to free himself of the vehicle before EMS arrived on scene. He was the only occupant of the vehicle.

After arrival, first responders assessed the driver’s condition. He was transported to FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries for further evaluation and treatment.

The minivan sustained heavy allover damage, with the front of the vehicle bearing the impact. Air bags were deployed, the front end was badly mangled, and the back windshield was shattered.

The cause of the crash was not given at this time.
