A local man passed away following a fiery crash just inside Harnett County on Saturday afternoon. Around 12:15 p.m., the Cypress Pointe Fire Department was dispatched to a motor vehicle collision near N.C. Highway 24-27 and Lizzie Jeter Lane, about two miles over the Harnett County line.
First responders arrived to find a Toyota Camry on fire after it had run off the road and crashed head-on into a dump truck parked near the driveway of a residence in Cameron.
According to authorities, the Toyota was traveling eastbound on N.C. 24-27 when the driver veered off the right side of the road for unknown reasons. The vehicle then traveled across the front of a property, narrowly missing a fire hydrant before striking the parked dump truck.
A bystander stopped and pulled the man from the car to a safe distance. A nurse who was passing through the area also stopped and began performing CPR.
The man was pronounced deceased a short time later.
While CPR was underway, firefighters extinguished the car fire and prevented it from spreading to the dump truck or nearby woods.
According to the N.C. Highway Patrol, which was on scene investigated the fatal crash, the man was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was not wearing a seat belt.
The dump truck was parked and unoccupied at the time of the crash.Â
N.C. 24-27 was shut down between Line Road and Dove Road for an extended period while crews worked the scene.
