A family and community are mourning the loss of 16-year-old Guadalupe Altamirano who was killed when a tree fell on his car while he was driving home on Saturday, July 16.
Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene in the 300 block of Pond View Drive near Robbins at 4:45 p.m. during a storm.
Incoming emergency units were cautioned due to the dangerous driving conditions. The storm in the area produced high winds with low visibility.
The family of the North Moore High School student created a Gofundme page to help with the funeral expenses.
“He was minutes from the house when this happened, unfortunately he died instantly when the tree fell on top of the car,” wrote his sister, Lorena Altamirano, on her Gofundme campaign. “All of us in the family are devastated to lose such a young person with so many dreams ahead of him. I ask all of you people who watch this to please offer your help to us who need it a lot right now, even if it is a little but it will help us.

A memorial balloon release was held over the weekend.
