Crash claims life of Southern Pines woman

A car crash claimed the life of a Southern Pines women Thursday evening. N.C. State Highway Patrol identified the victim as Sheree Lancaster, age 46. The accident occurred in Southern Pines on Fort Bragg Road at the entrance to Weymouth Woods at 9 p.m.

According to authorities, she was traveling east on Fort Bragg Road when she crossed the centerline and ran off the left side of the road. According to the highway patrol, the car traveled over 400 feet through the wood line, striking several trees before stopping off the road. The Volvo XC60 SUV was destroyed in the accident, leaving her pinned in the car.

Additional rescue units were paged to the scene, and a helicopter was placed on standby, but once firefighters cut through the wreckage to reach her, she was pronounced dead at the scene. She and her husband were on their way home. He was in a car behind her.

The highway patrol is investigating the exact cause of the accident.
