Emergency crews respond to roof collapse

A roof of a building under construction at the future site of a food truck court in Southern Pines collapsed Monday. Emergency crews were called at 9:30 a.m. to Red’s Corner located at Old U.S. Highway 1 and Morganton Road just behind the Pony Espresso drive-thru coffee shop.

Dispatchers with the 911 call center checked the status of Air Care for injuries associated with the roof collapse; however, three workers with Elite Roofing were transported to FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

The workers were on top of the roof when it collapsed, and they are expected to recover. No one was under the roof when it came crashing down.

Authorities believe there may have not been enough support for the roof at the time of the collapse. Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the scene.

The roof collapse comes on the heels of another collapse a few hundred feet away at the new Fidelity Bank on Old U.S. 1 and Belle Avenue in January. Three workers were injured when a gust of wind took down several roof trusses at the bank’s construction site.

The trusses fell on two of the workers, and the third worker fell off the roofline as he was standing above the trusses when the collapse occurred.

Two of the workers were transported to FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital for minor wounds. A landing zone was set up a few blocks from the scene at Memorial Park, and the third worker was airlifted to an area trauma center for a broken leg and other minor injuries.
