Driver flees during traffic stop in Westmoore

A driver fled the scene while deputies attempted to pull the vehicle over in the Westmoore area.

“On June 30, 2022, Deputies with the Moore County Sheriff’s Office initiated a traffic stop in the 2100 block of NC Highway 705 in Westmoore,” said Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields in a news advisory. “During the traffic stop, the vehicle fled, and deputies pursued the vehicle. Deputies were able to get the vehicle stopped in the 200 block of Longleaf Church Road in Westmoore.”

Deputies confiscated methamphetamine, cocaine, ecstasy, oxycodone, drug paraphernalia and $1,985 from the vehicle.

The driver, Dewan Barrett, 45, of Robbins, was placed at the Moore County Detention Center under a $200,000 secured bond on charges of possession with intent to sell and deliver schedule I controlled substance, possession of schedule I controlled substance, possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, felony possession of cocaine, possession with intent to sell and deliver methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine, maintaining a vehicle/dwelling place for controlled substances, simple possession of schedule II controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, flee to elude arrest with motor vehicle, reckless driving to endanger, driving while license revoked, stop sign violation, failure to maintain lane, stop lamp/brake light out, and resisting a public officer. Barrett was also entered wanted with an outstanding warrant for arrest.

Charles  Matthews, 51, of West End, was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver schedule I controlled substance, possession of schedule I controlled substance, possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, felony possession of cocaine, possession with intent to sell and deliver methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine, maintaining a vehicle/dwelling place for controlled substances, simple possession of schedule II controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and resisting a public officer. He was placed under a $75,000 secured bond.

Damien Purcell, 35, of Robbins, was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver schedule I controlled substance, possession of schedule I controlled substance, possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, felony possession of cocaine, possession with intent to sell and deliver methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine, maintaining a vehicle/dwelling place for controlled substances, simple possession of schedule II controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and resisting a public officer. The suspect’s secured bond was set at $75,000.

All three suspects have a July 20 court date and are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
