Driver trapped, roadway shut down after Cameron crash

A young man was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries Saturday night after crashing into a tree in Cameron. The single-vehicle crash happened just after 11 p.m. on N.C. Highway 24-27 at the intersection of Red Hill Road.

According to authorities on the scene, a Toyota Prius was traveling east toward U.S. Highway 1 when the driver crossed the center line, struck a tree off the left shoulder, and came to a stop in the middle of the roadway.

The vehicle sustained significant front and driver’s side damage.

Firefighters had to cut off the driver’s door to remove him. He was the only occupant.

A medical helicopter was initially requested, but it was later determined that the man’s condition only required transport to Moore Regional Hospital.

N.C. Highway 24-27 was shut down for close to an hour while crews worked the scene and the road was cleared.

The N.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Responding units included the Cypress Pointe Fire Department, Moore County EMS, the Moore County Sheriff’s Department, and the N.C. Highway Patrol.
