Cameron head-on collision claims two lives

A head-on collision near Cameron claimed the lives of two men late Monday afternoon. The two-vehicle crash occurred in the 600 block of U.S. Highway 15-501, just south of Donathan Lane.

According to officials at the scene, a Chevrolet service truck belonging to the Moore County Schools system was traveling northbound when a witness reported that it began swerving. The truck crossed the center line and struck a southbound Dodge truck head-on.

The severity of the impact left both vehicles with major front-end damage. Firefighters from Cypress Pointe and Carthage fire departments worked for over an hour to extricate both drivers, cutting the roofs off each truck in the process.

Both drivers were pronounced deceased at the scene.

A GoFundMe fundraiser page was created for Luke Blanchard, 23, of Sanford, who was driving the school district’s truck. He is survived by his wife, Michaela, who is a Moore County 911 dispatcher, and their son Jax.

The crash report identified the driver of the Dodge as Paul Matthews, 65, of Cameron. His GoFundMe page can be found here. He leaves behind a wife of more than 40 years, three children and 16 grandchildren.
