One in custody after Carthage motorcycle chase, crash

The evening rush hour through Carthage was slowed to a crawl Monday afternoon after a motorcyclist led law enforcement on a brief chase before crashing.

The chase began in Carthage around 4:45 p.m. near Hardee’s when a Kawasaki motorcycle was clocked speeding by the Carthage Police Department and failed to stop. The rider led the officer on a brief chase southbound on U.S. Highway 15-501 before colliding with a vehicle at South McNeill Street.

According to radio traffic, the motorcycle reached speeds over 100 mph, and the Carthage police officer made the decision to call off the chase due to heavy traffic conditions just moments before the motorcycle crashed.

After crashing, the rider fled on foot across the highway and into a wooded area behind the Wok n Roll restaurant. The pursuit didn’t last long, and he was detained shortly after.

He was checked out by EMS at the scene and then released into the custody of law enforcement with several charges pending.

Traffic on U.S. Highway 15-501 was slowed to a crawl while crews worked the scene.

Responding units were the Carthage Police Department, Moore County EMS, and the Moore County Sheriff’s Office.
