A man died Tuesday when his home caught on fire, near Vass. Douglas Samuel Little, 87, died at his home in the 2900 block of Lakebay Road. The fire was reported just after 11 a.m.
He was found in the home by firefighters and brought outside, but lifesaving measures were unsuccessful. He was the only one at home at the time of the fire.
Mr. Little was outside the home when firefighters arrived on the scene but later could not be located. Investigators are not sure why the man entered the home again. A dog survived the fire, but several other family pets did not.
Due to the extreme heat of the day, the fire required a vast majority of the local fire departments to respond to the fire, so that firefighters could rotate and not become endangered due to the heat.
On Wednesday, investigators from the Sheriff’s Department and Moore County Public Safety arrived back on the scene to determine the cause of the fire, but authorities do not suspect any foul play at this time.
