Fire destroys family home in Carthage

A house fire Wednesday afternoon displaced a family of five. The fire was reported shortly after 3 p.m. in the 1400 block of Joel Road in Carthage and drew a response from fire units across the county.

When crews arrived, flames and heavy smoke were visible from the roadway.

Authorities on scene told Sandhills Sentinel that though the home was occupied by a family of five, only three were home at the time and managed to escape out the back door unharmed.

It is believed the fire started near the front door, but the cause is still under investigation at this time.

Multiple fire departments responded, including Carthage, Whispering Pines, Cypress Pointe, Southern Pines, Seven Lakes, West End, and Eastwood.

Moore County EMS and the Moore County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene.

A section of Joel Road was temporarily closed while crews worked the fire.
