Obituary Ernest Lane Carter

A former Moore County Sheriff has passed away, according to a Thursday news release from Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields.

Retired Sheriff Lane Carter was elected in 2002. He served Moore County as sheriff for more than 10 years.

In 1978, Carter began his career with the Moore County Sheriff’s Office as a deputy and was promoted three years later to sergeant in the patrol division, according to Fields. Carter worked his way up to chief deputy by 1997.

Fields expressed his condolences in the release.

“His service to the citizens of our great County was nothing less than impeccable, as he dedicated 35 years of his life to Moore County and the law enforcement profession,” said Fields.  “He was an exceptional colleague, a true mentor, and most of all a great friend!  We at the Moore County Sheriff’s Office will dearly miss Sheriff Lane Carter. Please keep his wife, Anita, and the entire Carter family in your thoughts and prayers.”
