House fire claims life

A house fire outside of Vass claimed one person’s life Thursday afternoon.

The call came in just before 12:30 p.m. on Causey Road. According to radio traffic, the first arriving firefighter said heavy fire was showing from the single-story home. Smoke could be seen from 3 miles away on U.S. 1.

While firefighters were battling the blaze, one body was discovered. According to Cypress Pointe Fire Chief Mike Cameron, a man and woman lived in the home. At this point in the investigation, it is believed it was the man who passed away.

Firefighters were able to get the fire under control within 40 minutes. The fire destroyed the home, and firefighters were on the scene for an extended amount of time working overhaul.

“Sheriff’s Investigators, along with fire investigators from Moore County Public Safety, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF), and North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations (SBI) are currently working to determine the cause and origin of the fire,” said Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields. “The identity of the decedent is not being release at this time pending notification of the family.”

Responding to the initial call were Cypress Pointe Fire and Rescue, Crains Creek Fire & Rescue, Southern Pines Fire and Rescue, and Whispering Pines Fire and Rescue. A second alarm was called due to the heat, with Aberdeen Fire and Rescue and Carthage Fire and Rescue responding to assist. The Red Cross was called and was on the scene assisting the family.
