People are noticing Julia Golden’s talent. A singer-songwriter, Julia started playing guitar when she was around 13. The Carthage native has been singing her entire life. She’s been writing songs since a young age but started taking the role more seriously when she began high school at Union Pines.
On Jan. 18, she received the Michael Comer Emerging New Artist award at the Carolina Country Music Awards. This was Julia’s first time at the annual event, and she performed live for the attendees.

She took a moment to reflect on being recognized.
“It was such an honor and a blessing,” said 18-year-old Julia. “There are so many great artists in the history of the Carolinas. I was really surprised. I’m so incredibly grateful.”
Influenced by various styles and musicians, Julia ranked Chris Stapleton at the top in terms of those she admires.
“I’m a big fan,” she said.
Country icon Dolly Parton was named as another inspiration, as were rock legends Stevie Nicks, known mainly for her work with Fleetwood Mac, and Billy Joel.
While Julia handles many tasks in the studio and on stage, she pointed to one aspect when asked about her favorite part of performing.
“Realistically, I’m a singer first,” she said. “I’m really good at talking to people and making them feel like they’re part of the show.”
Julia spent much of 2024 performing live, performing more than 240 shows. Things will be less hectic this time around.
“We’ll do around 150 (shows) this year,” she said. “It’ll give us time to rest.”
When it comes to places to play, Julia talked about Music City.
“I always love performing in Nashville,” she said.
Her recording is also done in Nashville, but she has yet to sign with a record label. Artistic freedom is a priority for this rising star.
“We’re trying to keep things as independent as possible,” Julia, who graduated from Union Pines but also attended the prestigious Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan, said.
“Smoking Gun,” Julia’s next release, is slated to be out this month. It’s something she’s looking forward to.
“It’s a super-fun song,” she said. “I’m really excited to share that with everyone.”
Finding ideas for new music is a challenge. At a basic level, Julia has an eye and ear for what’s compelling.
“I love all kinds of art,” she said. “I kind of see art everywhere. It comes from everywhere. It’s what makes each song unique.”
