A car accident has claimed the life of a man after his car overturned into a creek Tuesday.

The vehicle overturned into a creek on Highway 24/27 outside of Robbins shortly after 2:30 p.m. The accident shut down Highway 24/27 for almost three hours causing traffic to back up for nearly 2 miles.

The vehicle flipped upside down into a creek located between McDuffie Road and Tarry Church Road.

Moore County Deputies Kim Edwards and Dustin Hussey and Detective Sergeant Tyler Cheek jumped into the cold water to try to rescue the victim from the submerged vehicle.

He was the only one in the car.

Sheriff Ronnie Fields sent out his condolences to the victim’s family and praised his staff for their heroism.

“While I am terribly sorry about the loss of life that occurred and will continue to remember the family in my prayers, I am tremendously proud of these three members of our office,” said Fields.  Deputies Edwards and Hussey and Detective Sergeant Cheek risked each of their own safety by entering the cold water in an attempt to save a life.  Their efforts do not go unnoticed or unrecognized.  On this occasion, Kim, Dustin, and Tyler practiced the motto that we preach every day here at the Moore County Sheriff’s Office, service before self.”

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

Responding to the scene was Eagle Springs Fire and Rescue, Robbins Fire and Rescue, Moore County EMS, Moore County Public Safety, Cypress Point Fire and Rescue Dive Team, Moore County Sheriff’s Department, and the State Highway Patrol.
