A man and his dog were uninjured Monday night after crashing into a downed tree near Carthage.
The single-vehicle crash occurred shortly after 8 p.m. when a Toyota Tacoma traveling north on Glendon-Carthage Road struck a large tree that had fallen across the roadway at the intersection with Old River Road.
The driver told officials he didn’t see the tree until it was too late. Authorities said dark conditions outside the city limits were a contributing factor.
The truck sustained front-end damage in the crash. The driver and his dog were the only occupants of the vehicle, and neither were injured.
Glendon-Carthage Road was shut down briefly while firefighters cut the tree into sections to clear the road until the N.C. Department of Transportation could remove the debris.
The N.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
Responding units included the Carthage Fire Department, Carthage Police Department, and N.C. Highway Patrol.
