A crash involving an 18-wheeler and two Jeep SUVs shut down U.S. Highway 1 on the outskirts of Southern Pines for over an hour on Monday evening. The wreck, which happened during a downpour, resulted in one person being transported by EMS and traffic delays for over an hour.
Emergency crews responded to the wreck around 5:30 p.m. in the southbound lanes near Air Tool Drive. Authorities on scene noted that the roadway was slick with rain at the time of the crash, contributing to hazardous driving conditions.
Five people, including two children, were in the vehicles at the time of the collision. One adult was transported by ambulance to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to emergency responders.
All three vehicles sustained moderate to heavy damage, and traffic was diverted onto Brothers Road while first responders worked to clear the scene of debris.
