Moore County Schools named Melanie Henderson as the 2022-2023 Teacher of the Year Thursday at Pinehurst Country Club, according to a press release. Bob Curtin was named Alternate Teacher of the Year for 2022-2023.
Henderson works at Southern Pines Elementary School as its music teacher.
Henderson teaches because serving the community has always been her driving force in life and in her professional career. She understands that students come from different walks of life that may be similar to or opposite her own background.
With this understanding, Henderson seeks to build healthy relationships while she walks the journey of learning with her students. Her patience, words of encouragement and acts of kindness are like seeds planted inside of the hearts and minds that can be nurtured during their time in school.Â
While Henderson may not see each of her students bloom fully during her time with them, she does believe that the learning experiences she provides and the care she shows each student as an individual will help them grow. By teaching music, Henderson empowers students to express themselves in positive ways and to discover unique things about who they are.
Henderson has a B.S. in Family and Consumer Sciences/Business from South Carolina State University, and a M.S. in Education: Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment from Walden University.
The school district named Bob Curtin, Pinecrest High School’s history teacher, as Alternate Teacher of the Year for 2022-2023.
Curtin grew up with a constant reminder of the responsibility of civic duty. While he originally intended to join the Peace Corps, Curtin’s first civic service was a tour of duty in the United States Army. Sensing that his civic duty was incomplete, upon retirement from that service with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, he embraced a different service: teaching students in public school.
Now, he shares his expertise in history with those who will succeed him in history. As a teacher and athletic coach, Curtin teaches mutual respect, understanding, friendship, accountability and the relevance of the educational experience.
Curtain is also the wrestling coach at Pinecrest High School. He has a B.A. in History from Hofstra University, and M.A. in Military History and Leadership from Command and General Staff College in Leavenworth, KS, and a M.A. in Military History from Norwich University.
