A quick response by local first responders prevented a fire from spreading at a multifamily dwelling earlier today, limiting damage and helping residents avoid displacement.
Officials with the Carthage Fire Department report that crews arrived to find a small fire, which was controlled by a Carthage police officer using a fire extinguisher. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze before it extended further into the building.
“This incident serves as an important reminder of fire safety, especially when it comes to smoking materials,” says the Carthage Fire Department. “Cigarettes must be completely extinguished before being placed in an ashtray. Even a small ember can reignite and quickly turn into a dangerous situation.”
Though the department did not disclose the address, it was noted that in multifamily structures, the attic space is often a common ceiling area shared between units. If fire were to enter the attic, it could spread rapidly throughout the building, putting multiple families and firefighters at risk.
“Please take a moment to practice fire-safe habits,” the department encourages. “A few extra seconds can make the difference between a close call and a major fire.”
