A standoff between a local man and the Moore County Sheriff’s Department on Wednesday ended with no injuries. The incident took place around 8:30 p.m. on Needham Road, near the Highway 24/27 intersection outside of Carthage.Â
Deputies were called to the home for a domestic situation with shots fired.
“Deputies were made aware by bystanders that a male subject in the residence had a gun and had fired several times,” according to a news release from the department on Thursday. “Deputies were able to call out to the subjects in the home to exit with their hands up and a female subject eventually exited the house. The female subject appeared to have minor injuries and was immediately taken for medical treatment.”
After the woman left the house, the suspect, Xavier McQuitter, 25, of Carthage, fired shots at officials while still inside the home. Moore County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team then responded to the scene.
The release said there was a three-hour standoff with failed negotiations. McQuitter was apprehended after “chemical munitions” were released.
“The beginning was intense, but it ended as good as it could have with no injuries,” said Moore County Sheriff’s Office in a phone call with Sandhills Sentinel. “We had to use gas to get him out of the residence. We had him checked out at the hospital, and he was not injured.”Â
McQuitter’s charges include discharging a firearm to incite fear, resisting a public officer, three counts of assault on law enforcement with firearm, and assault on a female.
The suspect is being held at Moore County Detention Center without bail for the charge of assault on a female. He has a $1,000,000 bond for the other charges.
McQuitter will appear in court on July 14 and is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
